Mindy Kaling has revealed whether she would consider returning to the role of Kelly Kapoor for the new spin-off of The Office.

She made her debut as Kelly in 2005 on the second episode of the sitcom, which was adapted from the UK series of the same name.

Amid a formidable cast that included Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson and John Krasinski, Mindy, 44, established herself as a standout performer.

As the show continued, her star rose, until she eventually became a big enough name to merit her own standalone sitcom The Mindy Project.

Now with a spin-off of The Office in development, Mindy has disclosed whether she would ever go back to the role that launched her career, spilling the truth to People.

She gushed that she would 'of course' be open to the idea, adding: 'For that group of people, I would definitely - I’d be open to it.'

Greg Daniels, who adapted The Office for US television and made Mindy a star by hiring her for the series, is also one of the creators of the spin-off.

The new Peacock show, which is currently untitled, is centered on the staff of a newspaper in the Midwest and is expected to begin shooting in July.

Domhnall Gleeson stars alongside Italian actress Sabrina Impacciatore, who shot to fame in America by playing a hotel manager on season two of The White Lotus.

When the prospect of playing Kelly again was brought up, Mindy found herself feeling curious about how the character would have changed over the years.

'It's been such a long time since I’ve acted as Kelly Kapoor that I’m like: "Oh, I’d have to get into character" - not to sound method,' said the Late Night actress. 'But I’m like: "What would she be like? At my age?"'

Mindy suspects the spin-off is 'gonna be great,' adding: 'I don’t have anything to do with it, but I’m big fans of the people behind the scenes, so I think it’ll be good.'

Greg is developing the series alongside Nathan For You co-creator Michael Koman, a comedy writer who previously worked on Late Night With Conan O'Brien.

By contrast to Mindy, Steve Carell has ruled out featuring on the spin-off, saying: 'I will be watching but I will not be showing up. It’s just a new thing and there’s really no reason for my character [Michael Scott] to show up in something like that.'

However he told The Hollywood Reporter that he is 'excited about it, it sounds like a great conceit. I love the idea — I guess it’s set in a failing newspaper company, and I worked with Domhnall Gleeson, who is one of the leads; I did The Patient with him and he’s an excellent actor and a super nice guy so I think it’ll be great.'

When Mindy was first cast as Kelly Kapoor, she was mainly known for her off-Broadway comedy Matt & Ben, a parody of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck's friendship that she wrote with her college gal pal Brenda Withers.

Television audiences around America were completely unfamiliar with Mindy, then 24, when Greg took a chance on her for The Office.

Along with playing Kelly Kapoor, she also worked as a writer on the series - and was initially the only woman on staff alongside seven men.

She left The Office in 2012 to create and star on her own sitcom The Mindy Project, which ran for six seasons until 2017, lurching from Fox to Hulu in the process.
